A “pet hate” of many designers, corporate comms is a space I love to play in.

Information is everywhere, and for corporate operations communicating key details, facts and figures in a way that stops reader’s eyes glazing over can be a challenge (to say the least).

I’ve delivered a range of corporate communications outputs for government & private sector clients distributed both in print and digitally. From project proposals and tourism prospectuses through to lengthy training materials, I love the challenge of using design to really connect and engage with readers. This stems from my belief that no information should be boring nor ugly, and that through carefully considered content strategies we can bring words to life and create “want-to-reads” instead of “must-reads”.

From finding the “golden nuggets” hidden in extensive datasets, creating visions of game-changing projects and educating users to improve productivity, corporate communications design is full of enduring, exciting challenges with the potential to revolutionise customer experience.

The learnings

Lateral thinking is key.

At a fundamental level, documents like training manuals seek to achieve the same overarching output. However, how you execute that output isn’t limited to a single medium, and exploring a range of avenues before committing to a concept is a key learning I’ve had.

Think visual.

A key question I ask myself when communicating corporate content is, “how much of this can be conveyed visually?”. Keeping readers engaged goes beyond great copy - the output should be able to tell a cohesive story and visuals can aide this, even if it’s a little more time consuming.

Content is what you make it.

Embrace the challenge of transforming a 40 page word document into a compelling, purposeful piece of art. A software manual might not be glamorous, but the key is immersing yourself in the process of completely transforming it into glitter.
